How important is God’s youth ministry? It’s very important. It’s God’s!
I came to know the Lord in my college years and that is one of the reasons youth and young adults are so dear to my heart in wanting to reach them with the gospel truth of Christ. I wish I could say that I was brought up in a Christian home and was part of a youth group early in my life, but neither of these were the case. I wish someone during my young life had shared Christ with me so I could have known the truth and let it set me free at that time so that I would have been able to guide my life by it. But that was not the case. So when the Lord did reveal His gospel truth to me during my college years, it just made me reflect back on my life and made me wish that I would have had the opportunity to have a great church, great youth group, and godly friends and godly adults to surround me during some of the most crucial times in my teenage years. But, as I stated, this was not the case. So, as I now have learned, seen, and heard of some very disturbing statistics that say that we (Christian churches) are losing many of our youth and young adults to a secularistic and anti-Christian mindset, it just makes my heart break for our young generation. It’s so very important that we help and come alongside the parents of our young folk.
Our young generation, now more than ever, need God and godly influences in their life. Now, more than ever, our middle and high school aged teenagers are confronted with so much of an evil and shameful mentality than any other generation before them. Everything evil you can think of is now confronting our teenagers face-to-face and every single day of their life. The enemy definitely wants to have at them with no holds barred. With so many opinions and with all the social media access that is now available, our teenagers seem to be at a strong disadvantage. However, our God is a HUGE God and we know that we all can overcome through Christ our Lord! And, God loves our teenagers and their families and He really does care for each one of them. So God sends people like us (youth pastors, ministers, & many caring adults) to reach out, do life with, and be of godly influences to them.
It’s a proven fact that God has often used young people to do great things. Many of our great Christian revivals were started with young people. I have no doubt that God wants to revive many of us still. And, I believe, God will use many of our young teenagers to do just that! One of my favorite verses to use with our youth group comes from 1 Timothy 4:12 which says, “Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith and in purity.” The apostle Paul had his young companion with him and he knew what God could do with him. The other verse, which is our motto, comes from Philippians 4:13 – “I am able to do all things through Him who strengthens me.” There is no doubt in my mind that there is no limit to what God can do in a person who is totally given to God and a young person who has the spirit of the living God! Let’s come alongside our youth and young adults and continuously be in prayer for them.
